A Director of the Leatherhead & District Chamber of Commerce, Zen George, is trying to raise awareness of the use of plastic carrier bags that damage the environment. She is currently driving this initiative with local traders and also through The Ashtead & Leatherhead Local.

To date, she has had a great response from the residents of Ashtead and Leatherhead and she would be interested to hear what the residents of Bookham think about this project.

She has already spoken to manufacturers of reusable cotton bags as well as cornstarch bags, the latter being completely compostable and he is sure the vast majority of you would like to help minimise their impact on the environment. With the support of local residents (consumers), she hopes they can achieve their goal of making Ashtead, Leatherhead, Fetcham and Bookham a carrier bag free zone.
