Capel Goes Green

Welcome to all visitors to this forum.

We are residents of Capel, a village in Mole Valley, Surrey, south of Dorking on the A24.

We have just started a local campaign to cut back on energy use and generally become 'greener' in our lifestyles.  Our intention is to educate ourselves, to learn how we can live more modestly. At the same time, we realise that we must become more politically active, we must lobby local and national governments and show them that we understand that drastic measures will be necessary to combat climate change.

To launch the campaign, we have held three open meetings.

At the first one, in February, we showed the Al Gore film, An Inconvenient Truth, followed by much discussion. David Smith, environmental consultant and local resident, brought the Al Gore statistics up to date for us and answered questions from the sudience.
(For those who missed the screening, a DVD of the film is lodged with Capel News in the village and can be borrowed, viewed and returned, free of charge.)

This event was followed by one afternoon meeting and one evening meeting in March. Darrin Green, local resident and environmental supporter introduced us to Derek Smith of Mole Valley Climate Change Awareness.  Derek came to Capel for both meetings and gave us his powerful presentation of the overall progression of climate change, of the impacts global warming is already having world-wide, and of the impacts it is likely to have in future. This vivid and alarming picture has energised and motivated us all to do something now, something to mitigate what will otherwise lie ahead for us all.

At the March evening meeting, we were joined by two speakers from Friends of the Earth, Kathy and Rob, who described how a powerful and experienced national organisation can add strength to our actions.

So we have created the Yahoo group open forum Capel goes green. Anyone visiting the capelgoesgreen site may read everything that has been written or 'posted'.

If you wish to comment or respond, you need to become a member of Yahoo and a member of the group. It costs nothing and only takes a minute to sign up.

SO PLEASE WRITE IN to capelgoesgreen@yahoogroups.com:

Tell us what changes you have already made to your lifestyle to save energy and live in a more sustainable manner.

Tell us how you plan to measure and record the steps you are taking.

Then tell us what changes you pledge to make in the near future.
