Although some of the reason for the woeful anmount of Wind turbine-generated electricity in the UK is due to applications being stuck in the planning system, it's also true to say that investment is being held back by the feed-in tariff (the amount electricity supply companies pay for electricity generated by renewables).
A decent feed-in tariff would also benefit micro-generation (e.g. put a solar panel on your own roof and sell the excess to the grid), but you don't hear much about that since the big companies couldn't give tuppence for microgeneration - they only care about multi-billion pound farms that only they can build and which therefore help to justify their existence.
