The leader of the Transprt for Surrey team within Surrey CC gave a very interesting and informative presentation of, firstly, data about the trends in traffic in Surrey, and how they propose to make sure the traffic keeps moving.

Principally they disagree with the national government's 'predict and provide' approach, showing data that demonstrates that this merely serves to increase demand .

Their strategy is not based on increasing traffic levels (data shows that draffic has not increased in Surrey for several years and is self-limiting as people basically choose not to drive when it is painful), but rather on 'helping' people choose not to make long journeys at peak time.

The techniques for this include trying to build 'sustainable communities' where people don't need to travel far, park and ride schemes, and better data etc.
